Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to become creative and attracted by the arts. She worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day for the love of the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. Her mother, too, was conscious of social issues and taught how to express herself through the art of. Even though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspired her to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce to broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given duty of looking after the home and looking through the rubbish of one jurors. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism, and she decided to move towards the publicity sector. DuVernay got her first job as a PR professional in the small studio that she worked in following her college. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. Her company launched a range of networks for promotion and lifestyle such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
