Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by the arts. The actress worked as a late night nurse, allowing her aunt the time she required during the working day to pursue her passion for theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that the art form could be utilized to promote activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Even though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma inspired her to create a documentary about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was still in university. She began her career working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury. She was also asked to look through their trash. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided that she would switch to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career working as a junior press assistant in a tiny film studio just after she had graduated from the college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
